The Franklin Half Dollar silver coin series was introduced in 1948, at the time of grave political unrest because of the cold war. This Franklin Half Dollar featured Benjamin Franklin, one of the most renowned of the Founding Fathers. In 1947, the then Mint Director and an admirer of Franklin, Nellie Tayloe Ross, wished the coin to depict a design honoring him. The 1962, Franklin Half Dollar was designed by John R. Sinnock, based on the design of a medal he had previously created in 1932. The reverse of this Franklin Half Dollar features a rendition of the famous Liberty Bell of Philadelphia. This silver coin series was cut short in 1963 to be replaced with the Kennedy Half Dollar the following year.
